Y’all forget that there’s a middle class to music and that not getting a “top 40” hit is not a failure for everyone. I was on one of these shows and my goal was to grow my career and business, which is what happened. There are obviously lots of fair critiques on this model but I feel that this is dismissive of an entire swath of the music industry who's just trying to pay their bills and make it work.

That’s a fair criticism. But I don’t think thats how the shows were ever really billed. They sell the dream of stardom. (Also more of a me problem but it would be impossible for me measure who turned being on these shows into a full time job). Which show were you on?

No of course not but I feel like people totally miss this with music competition shows where for other shows they take it for granted. Nobody calls a chef who goes on Chopped a failure if they don't get 3 Michelin stars after. They go on for the exposure and we all know that. Nobody has any grace for the music industry though lol, it's either you're Billie Eilish or you're nothing. That really pmo.

The shows' business model is to make a compelling season of television; that's all...the viable path to the music industry from them has been dead for years and I think the public generally knows and accepts that. I think the real story is not that people aren't getting famous from them but rather that the pay structures for contestants are highly predatory.

Yeah, exactly. If, after having been on this show, you get asked to do a few live shows with some little British band looking for a singer, that's also quite nice. You don't even need number one hits if that British band then signs you for a few years of stadium tours around the world.

I disagree that it should have been cancelled. Rather, the show should have worked harder to promote the artists after their wins. Perhaps a better record company was needed. This was the NUMBER ONE show on TV during its heyday. Millions of people watched an voted! The industry lost the chance of getting these potential stars out there for more successful careers. Since most of them won by singing classic pop hits why not have them at least release albums full of covers?! The fact is that artists like Kris Allen and Jordin Sparks should have been much bigger but didn't have support from the show and the industry behind it.

American Idol had a crazy run for like ten years. I’m just being a hater. I liked the lead Kris Allen single

He also had some later great cuts such as this one which is one of my personal faves:https://youtu.be/1C8tNS7gdio?is=GQQNTZfw4IELC3OE

The “appeal” of American Idol was always the early audition shows where Simon would humiliate some poor schlub and Paula would gush over someone else. I was never the target demographic but must confess I tuned in a couple of times to see the schtick. By the time they got to Hollywood I was out.

Kelly is definitely good but I think Adam Lambert is a better overall singer than she is. She's more of a belter whereas he seems to have more he can do with his voice. I don't always care for what he does but I saw him with Queen and he was awesome. Hell of a singer and an artist.

Part of the reason there were more singers that went somewhere earlier on in American Idol's lifespan is because it had first mover advantage and was a pretty novel thing back in its time, but also because those seasons hapoened before the judges became the stars of the show. Nobody knew who any of them were except Paula and she wasnt such a huge star that she blotted out everybody else. Even the judges on the X Factor are known but not so much that they're distractions. This is why nobody coming from The Voice has gone anywhere as a result of being on that show despite the contestants being overall better quality than the ones on AI. The contestants are almost props for the judges rather than the point of the show. It's almost unfair for the producers to put unknown acts on next to some of the biggest stars in music as there's no way anyone will remember them. AI went in the same direction when it started putting bigger current stars on as opposed to industry types.

Yes but Nicole Scherzinger did it first on Popstars and she has a Grammy, Tony and an Olivier Award. The first season of a two season forgotten joke of a show actually did find someone who has had real longevity in music and theater. And not for nothing, I do believe Nicole could sing Golden, easily.

Would be interesting to look at album sales, if only to see if Melanie Martinez drags The Voice's pitiful numbers up a bit

If you look at total hits rather than unique artists, The Voice actually does okay because of one man: Morgan Wallen. He didn't win, though

Kelly Clarkson has better range but Kerry Underwood’s How Great Thou Art on the ACM Music Awards is the most jaw dropping show stopper of all time.

You`re right, Chris!

Thank you.

I haven’t even read this yet and I already agree

You have a point about no one else matching Kelly Clarkson's raw vocal abilities. The girl has some serious pipes. But Carrie Underwood comes pretty close. I saw her in concert a couple years ago, and sheer power she puts into every song for the entire concert is incredible. She did a cover of "Welcome to the Jungle" that you wouldn't expect to work, but it totally does.
