As an IT professional, I have to tell how impressive the breadth of journalism is. I love how you've analyzed such an immense source of data and was able to present it in an informative and thought enjoy manner. Looking forward to read your book!

I think a lot of this comes from the music industry not building up and pushing new stars like they did in the past and relying more on legacy artists and established acts. Just like how most movies these days seem to be some sort of remake or sequel, the same is happening with music.

Hi. I'm just a retired teacher who taught data visualization as part of my research class back in the TUFTE days, so you certainly know way more than I do about this topic. But I thought one of the charts could benefit from smoothing via a method such as a running five or ten year average. Can the other readers pick the one that would most obviously show a long term trend more quickly if such a technique were applied?

I remember Bob Lefsetz writing a piece a few years ago (might have been pre-covid but can't remember) about how it took most songs about a year from release to actually get traction on streaming services. Things taking longer to break now in general could account for some of it.

There may be others but I only remember Kris Kristofferson having “made it” at 35 or so after the army as well as Bill Withers (33). Can’t imagine that train hasn’t left. If not already famous by 30 get a day job. Data dudes want sure bets so, yeah, if already famous you can defend the bet. Only question: are you thinking “labels”, who are seriously struggling, can still “develop”?
